The Donkey Sanctuary is located
just outside Sidmouth close to the village of Branscombe where around 500
donkeys are cared for in unspoilt farmland and countryside.
The Donkey Sanctuary opens from
9am until dusk 365 days a year and admission is FREE.
Visitors to the Donkey Sanctuary
are free to spend as much time as they wish meeting the donkeys in the main
yard who adore fuss and attention. You are also welcome to take a stroll
around the various fields and walks or ramble down to the sea, pausing at the
nature conservation area along the way. There are also a range of indoor areas
for inclement weather.
The Donkey Sanctuary was founded
in 1969 by Dr. Elisabeth Svensden MBE and since that time over 8500 donkeys
have been taken into their care. These have included donkeys that may have
been neglected or mistreated, have retired from working on beaches or perhaps
the owners simply could no longer care for them. Whatever their circumstances,
no donkey is every refused admission provided it has a certificate of fitness
to travel.
The majority of the donkeys at
Slade House Farm are elderly and are kept there in order to be close to the
veterinary hospital. The sanctuary also owns nine other farms where the
remainder of the every growing family of donkeys are cared for by a team of
dedicated staff.
