The
picturesque town of Budleigh Salterton lies on the south coast of Devon in Lyme Bay. It is nestled between Otter Head to the east and
magnificent towering red cliffs to the west. Budleigh Salterton gets its name
from the salt pans which were once present at the mouth of the River Otter ,
these provided salt to neighbouring hamlets, which was used to preserve food.
The town enjoys a mild climate throughout the year and it is said by many locals
to have its own micro-climate.

One of the most striking features of Budleigh Salterton is it's 3 mile long bay
which stretches from Otter Head to Straight Point, with the long shingle beach
(approximately 2 miles long) sweeping around the bay. The bay provides an
excellent area for water sports such as scuba diving, waterskiing and kite
surfing. In summer months the beach
is zoned for swimming by marker buoys. Spectacular views of the bay can be had
when looking west from Otter Head over the sparkling waters on a sunny day.

The River Otter runs to the east of the town meandering it's
way from Otterton a short walk up river. The River Otter broadens out as it
approaches the sea to form the once navigable Otter estuary & Otter estuary
nature reserve, providing a haven for wildlife and birds. There is a hide for
birdwatchers on the east side of the estuary and two shielded bird-watching
platforms on the footpath which runs along the west side of the estuary. There
are several walks along the estuary, which begin at Lime Kiln car park to the
east of the town which are well sign posted. Along side the estuary is Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club which plays a
variety of fixtures throughout the summer, visitors are always welcomed.
The town itself has a variety of small shops selling
everything from fresh local produce & ice-cream to paintings. There are several
restaurants, take-aways and local pubs within the town serving Chinese cuisine,
Fish & Chips as well as traditional English dishes. The town has its own
small museum which is situated on Fore Street (The Fairlynch Museum) which hosts various exhibitions each year,

The museum building in itself in worth a look as it is situated in a picture postcard thatched
building close to the sea front. Also worth a visit is Bicton Park Botanical Gardens.
