The
wonderful landscaped gardens at Bicton Park were originally laid out over 275 years ago by
the First Baron Rolle. Since then they have been conferred with the
highest conservation status by English Heritage and are Grade 1* listed
gardens. Today the gardens are owned and run by Simon & Valerie Lister who are
gradually restoring each area of the garden to its former glory.
The
gardens are laid out into several areas including the magnificent Italian
Garden with its recently restored mirror pond and fountain. At the top of the
Italian Garden is the Orangery where tea and light lunches can be enjoyed. The
Italian garden is laid out to the design of Andre Le Notre who also planned
the gardens at Versailles for King Louis XIV, shown right: The gardens also
have a magnificent palm house (above left) as featured on 'The Glass Garden'
as part of 'The Flying Gardener' series on BBC 2.
Tucked away in the corner of the American
garden is the Shell House which houses a collection of sea shells collected
from around the world which are displayed around the walls.
During your stay in Devon, Bicton Park is well worth
a visit, but allow at least half a day to enjoy the gardens fully.
