Brixham is a small
town situated on the South Devon coast at the southern end of
Torbay. Brixham town is stepped in history and due to its location
on the south coast life in the town has always revolved around the
sea.
Many of the street
names and places in Brixham are in themselves a guide the the towns
history. For example Pump Street is where the town pump once stood,
Monksbridge was the bridge built by the monks. However two names
which do not appear on modern maps are 'Fishtown' and 'Cowtown'.
These historic names came from the times when the town was 2
separate communities; Cowtown was where the farmers of the town once
lived upon the hill and Fishtown was the area close to the sea where
the fishermen and their families lived. Today Cowtown lives on in
the summer 'Cowtown Carnival'.
The trawler was invented
in Brixham in the 19th Century and was originally of wooden
construction; these original designs influenced trawler design
across the world. The fishing industry in Brixham still has a strong
place today in the towns economy, with working fish quays, fish
markets and regular trawler traffic coming in and out of the harbour
followed by flocks of seagulls. In keeping with Brixham's maritime
history is it is also here that you will find the replica of the
Golden Hind, Sir Frances Drake's ship moored in the old harbour.
In addition to
commercial boat traffic from Brixham you will also find pleasure
boat traffic from Brixham Marina which occupies a prominent position
inside the breakwater and provides a pleasant area for a level
stroll round on a summer evening.
Brixham Breakwater
not only provides protection to the harbour and marina from storms,
it also provides a Mecca for divers and sea anglers alike. Good
scuba diving can be enjoyed from breakwater beach which is adjacent
to a main pay and display car park at the end of the breakwater.
There is marine life in abundance around the breakwater and during
the summer months Trigger fish, wrasse and many other fish may be
seen. Brixham
provides a good base to explore the South West and is well worth a
visit, for further information about Brixham and he surrounding area
